We have non-conference NBA action to consider for Monday night when the 1-1 Charlotte Hornets meet the 2-1 Los Angeles Clippers for the first of a two-game season series. This preview was published before the start of Sunday nights Hornets-Los Angeles Lakers matchup and all opinions are based on the stats from Saturday night NBA action.
Hornets 1-1 StartCharlotte opened its season with a solid, 128-125 home-opening victory over the Chicago Bulls and followed that up with a 121-99, Friday night dud at home to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Hornets point guard Devonte’ Graham came off the bench to score 24 points with four assists and Miles Bridges scored 17 points in a losing cause. The Hornets were outrebounded 52-42 but were without center Cody Zeller as he missed the game due to personal reasons.
Starting guard Nicolas Batum has missed all but the first game of the season with a broken finger and is listed as out for Monday night's tilt.
Clippers Lose to PhoenixThe Clippers opened its season with huge wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and an even bigger road win over the Golden State Warriors but suffered its first loss on the road Saturday night to the Phoenix Suns by a score of 130-122. Montrezl Harrell came off the bench to lead Los Angeles with 28 points and seven rebounds, Kawhi Leonard scored 27 points with 10 assists and eight rebounds and Lou Williams had 23 points in a losing cause. Clippers head coach Doc Rivers had this to say about his team as reported by the Associated Press;
"You have a couple of these games where you're just late on everything," Rivers said. "I thought we were late on everything. On the offensive end, we had no pace. We deserved to lose."
Paul George is still out and will miss Monday’s game as well as likely several others as he continues to recover from off-season shoulder surgery. Rodney McGruder is still out with an ankle injury and rookie guard Amir Coffey is out with an ankle injury.

- Clippers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. NBA Southeast.
